Back then I didn’t have curtains.
The street lamps always shone so beautifully through my window creating a magical glow in my dark room.
My nightie had become too small for my growing body, but it was my favourite and was cool in the warm nights. The door had been left ajar, to let the air circulate, and my blanket was strewn sideways allowing the breeze to kiss my hairless legs.

I slept in pure innocence.

My mother had said she wanted a relationship not based on sex.
Her still body lay sleeping by 10 every night, ready for tomorrow’s early start.
She never stirred once in her dream land, her breath slowing to a steady deep drone and her heart beating faintly.
Her arm wrapped around you, tightly like always. But tonight your body lay tense.

I didn’t hear the floorboards creek.
And I didn’t see the door slide open.

I didn’t feel the blanket slide off
Or the smell of your breath upon me.

Not until, my innocence was up and I tasted the sting of your ‘love’
